When seeing an orthodontist in your area, be it Denver or Boulder or another city, people want to know what orthodontic braces cost 'on average'. Here are the results from one website BracesInfo.com for the Denver metro area as of March 2010:
| Service |
Average
Fee Aug 15, 2009
|
Highest
Fee Aug 15, 2009
(95th percentile) |
| Initial Exam |
Free |
$250.00 |
| Comprehensive Orthodontics - Youth |
$6,180.71 |
$7,327.22 |
| Comprehensive Orthodontics - Adolescent |
$6,578.83 |
$7,774.89 |
| Comprehensive Orthodontics - Adult |
$7,077.76 |
$8,523.28 |
| Replace Lost Retainer |
$381.53 |
$488.32 |
While this is just one set of information based on a few surveys, it's interesting to note how the average and highest fees increase with the age of the patient. This makes sense if you consider how the older we get, the more important the cosmetic look of the orthodontics (braces, etc) used matters. The more important the cosmetic look becomes, the more willing patients are to pay (or get their parents to pay) for braces that look better, such as clear braces , ceramic braces, Invisalign or lingual braces.
Also, this particular calculator doesn't identify what kind of dentist performed the orthodontic treatment - a general dentist or a orthodontist. These days many general dentists are treating less-complex orthodontic cases themselves using Invisalign or other technologies, and referring out the more complex cases to the orthodontists. I would expect the specialists charge more for their services, since they have the additional training and experience.
Please note that the numbers above are generated from American Dental Association and US Bureau of Labor Statistics and American Chamber of Commerce data (you can read the full breakdown here).
