Considering
a dental bridge? Reconsider and consider dental implants. Dental implants are
a safe way to replace some or all of your teeth with successful, long
term results. If cared for properly, your new implants can provide
you with a lifetime of use, along with the added benefits of having the
look and feel of natural teeth. Has your curiosity been peaked?
So
what are dental implants, you're wondering? They are titanium posts
that are similar to tooth roots (see picture). The posts are inserted into the jawbone
and as the jaw heals around it, locking the implant in place. The new
tooth is then placed on top of the post, replacing the missing tooth
with a brand spanking new one.
But
why dental implants over a dental bridge? When you have a tooth replaced with
the typical bridge method, the tooth on both sides of the missing tooth
are shaved down to almost nothing, so that the bridge to be cemented
onto them. These "support" teeth are most likely healthy teeth that are being intentionally compromised and cannot be replaced. On the other hand, implants are freestanding,
replacing the missing tooth and root without interfering or causing
damage to your other teeth. Better yet, implants actually help keep your
the bone structure of your jar healthy. Studies show that dental implants stimulate and
preserve the jawbone, helping prevent erosion over time that is responsible
for facial changes due to tooth loss.
So
before you go for the traditional bridge route, check with your dentist
about dental implants and your options. Remember, it never hurts to ask.
