Be Smart About Your Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that erupt in most people in the late teens or early twenties. Dentists can assess the position of your wisdom teeth by taking x-rays of your mouth, and can determine whether or not your wisdom teeth should be removed.

Improper alignment can trap bacteria between the wisdom teeth and the second molars. In some cases, wisdom teeth are impacted - their eruption is blocked by bone, gums or other teeth and need to be removed.  According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, "Impacted teeth can be painful and lead to infection. They may also crowd or damage adjacent teeth or roots." Impacted wisdom teeth can also create an opening in which bacteria can thrive.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Patient Funny Video

Ah, what would the world be without another viral video. This particular video is of a young lady who just had her wisdom teeth removed. She was obvious sedated during the procedure and in coming out of it, had a few things on her mind including unicorns, distant lands and a dream of becoming a rapper.

Having general anethesia can produce some interesting results to say the least. Do you or anyone you know have any funny stories about getting your wisdom or other teeth extracted?

Some Basic Wisdom on Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teethThe eruption of wisdom teeth is a fairly painful process. I ignored my wisdom teeth until I was 24 years old and let me tell you, it was not pretty. Months prior to finally agreeing to have them extracted, the gums around the teeth became inflamed and hurt like nothing else. Here I give you some basic wisdom about wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in the permanent set of teeth in the age group 15-25 years. They are four teeth total with each being the last tooth at the four ends of upper and lower jaw. Wisdom teeth do not erupt in all individuals and in some rare cases, remain completely absent. But why do these teeth in particular cause the problems? Call it evolution but the need for larger and powerful jaws has decreased and the modern day mouth possesses a much smaller jaw resulting in congested space for the eruption of wisdom teeth.

Impacted Wisdom TeethWisdom tooth problems occur most often when the teeth erupt directed away or towards the second molars, when angled towards the tongue or towards the cheek or when the wisdom teeth are stuck in the jawbone or gum and are unable to erupt resulting in impacted teeth.

A word of advice, don't wait until the teeth are impacted like I did. Be proactive and have them removed early on. It is less work for the dentist and less of a pain for you.
